Economic Inequality

Economic inequality is defined as the wealth disparities between more and less privileged individuals in the society. Economic inequality has pernicious effects for society as a whole and it has been characterized as one of the main challenges of our time. How people perceive and experience economic inequality? What are the threats associated to the perception of economic inequality and why people might perceive that economic inequality is unfair? How people react to economic inequality?

The first aim of this project is to implement a qualitative approach to explore how people construct different perceptions of economic inequality based on personal and societal threats and fairness related concerns.

Second, we will measure the different threats and fairness related concerns associated to economic inequality and we will explore how these are interconnected and shaped by people´s socioeconomic positions, ideologies and social identities.

Third, we will test the mediating role of threats and fairness related concerns in the relationship between perceived economic inequality and demand for more equality (through collective action or redistribution).

Fourth we will use an experimental approach to test causal relations between the different perceptions of economic inequality and demand for more equality. We will specifically focus on collective action participation, attitudes towards redistribution, and support for different types of redistribution and social welfare policies.
